We all know that contact lenses can be a barrier in the process of oxygen transmission to the cornea. Oxygen permeability is a measure of this barrier. The larger the value, the more oxygen permeability. It is the product of the diffusion coefficient and the solubility coefficient of oxygen through the contact lens, so the oxygen transmission rate is determined by the "material" of the lens, regardless of the geometric shape or curvature design of the lens.

The oxygen permeability of traditional materials (hydrogel, HEMA) contact lenses is only about 10, while the Dk/t value of silicone hydrogel (SiHy) materials is 100-160, and the oxygen permeability can be improved by more than 10 times compared with hydrogel materials. Hydrogel contact lenses transmit oxygen through water. The higher the water content, the higher the oxygen permeability. However, the increase of water content will affect the formability of lenses. In addition, lenses with high water content will easily absorb water from the eyes, so this has been limiting the improvement of oxygen permeability of contact lenses.

At first, they will be comfortable and moist, but with the increase of wearing time, the water will evaporate. If the lenses lack sufficient water support, they will absorb water from tears to supplement, and then the eyes will feel dry.
